The Backdrop
NCBA, right from the beginning, had been simultaneously operating from Dhaka and Calcutta of the then undivided India. From there, it had been serving the students with hundreds of its outstanding publications in different branches of Science, Humanities, Commerce, Engineering, and Medicine since its inception in 1921. The Company, founded by Jatindranath Sen, initially imported and distributed foreign books of high circulation for Indian market which had sort of pathological predisposition to low-priced editions. It was a difficult time. And the crème de la crème of Indian publishing was desperately in search of an idiom of their own to establish some identity in the global market. Back then, Calcutta was the sanctum sanctorum of Indian book-world; and the business moguls of the bookdom of Bengal were trying hard to look beyond the formulaic. They had to move out of their comfort zone ignoring the well-delineated boundary of traditional business, hitherto inflicted on them by the profit centres of western publishing outfits. At this critical juncture, NCBA made a paradigm shift by launching indigenous publishing programme of cutting-edge texts for the advanced level students of different streams of Physical, Biological and Health Science. Authors, known for their excellence in scholarship, and pedagogical approach in Science and Technology, were also identified and encouraged to contribute manuscripts in respective areas. Having already gained proficiency in promotion and distribution of books, for NCBA, it was not difficult to nurture this astonishing array of talents; very soon quite a few of its publications went into several reprints and editions.

Consistent cultivation of publishing virtuosity had taken NCBA through the vicissitudes of academic exposition throughout the world.
